Burglary suspect still at large in Oconto County

ABRAMS-  A suspect believed to be involved in multiple burglaries is still at large in Oconto County.

According to FOX 11 early Tuesday morning a deputy was patrolling the area by Pine Acres Golf Course due to recent burglaries.

At that time the deputy saw a suspicious person on the premises and asked him to stop.

The man began running leading to an on foot chase.

During the chase, the man fired at the deputy.

The deputy then fired back at the man before he ran into the woods.

Arriving officers were not able to locate the suspect.

Due to the ongoing search, Abrams Elementary School was closed on Tuesday.

WBAY said Oconto County Sheriff Michael Jansen believes the public is in no danger and that it was an isolated incident.

According to Channel 5  the description of the man is as follows; “A male with a skinny build, lighter complexion, and at the time wearing a dark shirt and dark pants.”

Story Choice
I chose this story because I have a personal connection to it. I live 10 minutes away from Pine Acres and was woken up by sirens that day. Therefore this story not only has my interest, but is relevant to me. When the incident first happened that morning, my Facebook page was blowing up with statuses wondering what was going on because the sirens were so close. I have a little more interest in this story too after reading more on it because I don’t understand why the suspect would shoot at an officer? That makes me think he is a little more dangerous than the police are leading him on to be. Plus, there were four departments that responded to this incident.

  1. Jen- Nice job on this story, again you kept it very concise and easy to follow the story. You also ended it nicely with a description of the man, this way the readers will leave with important information in case they get information on the case. CI- Keep the inverted pyramid in mind, i.e- put the most important facts first in the story, then filter down from there. Overall, very nice story!

  2. Important to a local community. You bring up a valid point about the police potentially downplaying the criminal. He fired at officers and they closed an elementary school - that sounds kind of important. This story definitely has proximity for you.
